History
Here is the most ancient building in Huelva. The accurate date of its construction is unknown, but we can assert that it took place during the Middle Ages – in fact, the late Muslim period.
Architectonic Characteristics
The construction of this Muslim hermitage or Morabito probably took place before the city was conquered in 1262 by King Alfonso X the Wise of Castile. A Morabito was a Muslim holy man who lived as a hermit in a small building which received the same name. These buildings used to be close to water wells or springs and were usually located on high places. Morabitos are typical from countries from Northwest Africa and are probably related to pre-Islamic religious cults.
