The old Carmen Market was located in the neighborhood of El Carmen and was inaugurated on December 20, 1866. In a short time it became one of the most traditional and characteristic places in the city. Later, in a very short period of time, its space limitations became visible due to the great population growth in the 20th century.
The new Carmen Market opened its doors to the public on February 9, 2010. It was built a few meters away from the old market. Its facilities are more accessible, its spaces more spacious and its conditions more hygienic. Proof of this are, for example, the incorporation of a greater number of toilets or a permanent cleaning service.
The market currently covers some 30,000 square meters, 5,900 of which are dedicated to sales. In its stalls, which are larger and much better equipped, we can find a wide variety of products. It has 189 stalls specialized in meats, fish, fruits and vegetables and some stalls dedicated to miscellaneous products.
It can be seen that the building of the new Carmen Market is modern and its streets are very wide, which gives a great feeling of spaciousness. Its facilities are equipped with the highest innovations.
In addition, in the Carmen Market you can visit the Gastronomic Walk of Fame. A space dedicated to honor the best Latin American chefs in the Binomic Congress held every year in our city.
It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the city.
The Carmen Market is located at Avenida de Italia, 2.
The opening hours are Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm.
