Brotherhood of Emigrants

The origin of the Brotherhood of Emigrants of Huelva took place in the city of Bocholt (Germany), by the hand of the Huelva emigrant Juan Gil Zamora, in the early sixties.

The idea of the brotherhood was first forged in the Spanish-German Club Virgen del Rocio, being declared the Blanca Paloma Patroness of the Spanish colony in Bocholt.

At Pentecost “el Romerito” is organized with a sung Mass and later an Andalusian party in the Castle of Geme, on loan from the City Hall.

For this first ” romeria” the first “Simpecado” of the Brotherhood was made by the emigrant Matías Aceitón Vega from Almonte and the first President and first Elder Brother were appointed respectively, the German director of Labor Carlos Rinches and the emigrant Juan Romero Roldán, also from Almonte.

Hermandad de Emigrantes, Huelva

In 1967, the energy crisis and the lack of work in Germany resulted in the return of many emigrants to Spain, which led to the transfer of the Simpecado to Huelva in October 1968, as well as the beginning of the process to canonically establish the Brotherhood in our city and the constitution of the Brotherhood as a Filial Brotherhood of the Matriz de Almonte. The Simpecado arrived in Huelva via Madrid-Seville, where it was welcomed by the “rocieros” of those towns, to later transport the Simpecado by bus to Huelva, receiving a warm welcome in several towns along the way, among them La Palma del Condado, Niebla and San Juan del Puerto. The entrance in Huelva was in praise of crowds, being received the Simpecado in the parish of Nuestra Señora del Rocío de Huelva, by its parish priest and thousands of Huelva people who showed, from the beginning, their great affection for the new brotherhood.

The Brotherhood
Establishment

The canonical establishment of the Brotherhood in our city was not easy, which led the Simpecado to be kept in the private home of Teresa Soler de Sánchez, on Blanca Paloma Street in the Viaplana neighborhood of Huelva.

The Brotherhood
Establishment

The canonical establishment of the Brotherhood in our city was not easy, which led the Simpecado to be kept in the private home of Teresa Soler de Sánchez, on Blanca Paloma Street in the Viaplana neighborhood of Huelva.

This parish seat was obtained in the nearby town of Aljaraque, in the Parish Church of Our Lady of Remedios, where the Marian banner of this Huelva corporation was transferred on August 14, 1970, from where he made in May 1971 the first official pilgrimage, taking the Brotherhood its own carriage, donated by the people of Lucena del Puerto rociero. In this first pilgrimage the Brotherhood was sponsored by the Brotherhood of Rociana del Condado, which presented it to the Hermandad Matriz de Almonte, receiving the Emigrantes Brotherhood the number 38 among the affiliates.

On April 27, 1972, the Bishop of Huelva decreed at the request of many founding members of the Brotherhood and especially Juan Gil, the transfer of canonical seat to the Parish of Our Lady of Sorrows of Huelva. Already in May 1998, they moved to their current headquarters, their own temple in the Paseo de la Glorieta in the Molino de la Vega neighborhood of Huelva, within the parish of the Cathedral of La Merced. It would be almost impossible to detail all the work of this authentically exemplary Brotherhood, whose association has been recognized as of “Public Utility” by the Ministry of the Interior on September 21, 1978.

Finally, and in relation to the growth of the heritage of the brotherhood itself, it should be noted the achievement of a magnificent and spacious brotherhood house in the village built in the seventies, the execution of an artistic embossed silver cart for the Simpecado made by the Villareal Workshops in 1976, the new Simpecado blessed in the Parish of the Conception of Huelva on December 8, 1991 and undoubtedly the most important premiere of the young but intense and fruitful life of this brotherhood of Huelva until now, as was the blessing on May 8, 1998 of its own temple, from which to continue giving an example of Christianity full of spirit rociero to all Huelva.
