The Huelva Carnival or “Colombino” Carnival takes place in February, although the events associated with it, such as the “Concurso de Agrupaciones”, begin a month earlier.
Among the activities that are organized for the Carnival are the award to the Choqueras Mayor and Infantil, the edition of the official poster, the Vuelta de la Noria, etc. The Carnival ends with the Burial of the Choco, in which the men dress as a widow, and go in funeral procession, until the choco is burned.
The Carnival Parade, which takes place on Saturday, fills the streets of Huelva with rhythm and color. Its itinerary may change, so we recommend that you check the information before coming to enjoy the show.
The “Colombino” Carnival is a popular manifestation that dates back to 1863 when, on the occasion of the inauguration of the Círculo Mercantil y Agrícola, a costume ball was held. As a continuous event it appears from 1880 to 1936, in which dances, parades and parades, and competitions of murgas and chirigotas occur every year with a high popular participation. This first stage ended in 1936, but it was not until 1983, when several fans went to the City Council of Huelva to request the floats for the Cavalcade of the Magi. A month later, this parade was renamed as “Colombino” Carnival.
In 1984 the “Federación Onubense de Peñas y Asociaciones de Carnaval” (FOPAC) was born, as the one in charge of organizing the Carnaval Colombino, which today is one of the most important carnivals in Andalusia. That same year the first contest of groups was held in The Grand Theatre. In 1992, the first Provincial Contest was held, with a massive participation of groups from Huelva and the Province.
