Nuevo Colombino Stadium

Although in the past many provinces tried to claim to be the first to practice soccer in our country, in 1974 the matter was settled, with the celebration of the Centenary of Spanish soccer, making it clear once and for all that Huelva was the pioneer in the practice of such a popular sport.

The cause of the arrival of soccer in our province was, without a doubt, the adjudication of the Rio Tinto mines to the “Rio Tinto Company Ltd.”, which led to the arrival of the English to Huelva in 1873. And with them came the love of sports such as football, tennis, cricket …. Several soccer teams were formed and played against each other in the mining basin, and although at first the sport that most attracted the people of Huelva was cricket, the truth is that on December 23, 1889 the Huelva Recreation Club, the Dean of Spanish soccer, was founded in the halls of the Hotel Colón.

History of the Stadium

Before arriving at the current stadium, the Recre, as the Real Club Recreativo de Huelva is popularly known, went through numerous soccer fields, among which it is worth mentioning the old Velodrome and the Colombino Stadium. This new Colombino Stadium was inaugurated in November 2001, and is the work of the architect Joaquín Aramburu. It was designed to revitalize the port area known as “Barriada de Pescadería” and to offer its owner, Recreativo de Huelva, a modern and functional stadium in accordance with the sporting expectations of the club. It so happens that these grounds were the same ones on which soccer began to be played in the city back in the 19th century.

Its capacity is 21,670 seated spectators, including thirty-two private boxes and seventy-two seats in press boxes.

The main grandstand stands out in this construction, which is accessed from the outside through a high plaza overlooking the estuary and where the ticket offices, the official store and a restaurant are located. Inside, this grandstand is covered by a visor that covers both the middle and the upper part.
