The Grand Theatre of Huelva, center of the city's cultural life

The Grand Theatre of Huelva was inaugurated on August 30, 1923, honoring the title granted by Alfonso XIII. Born from the aspirations and desires of the Huelva bourgeoisie, the project of Pedro Sánchez y Núñez, presents a neoclassical style so in vogue in the architectural historicism of the nineteenth century and so rooted throughout Spain for the construction of buildings of a cultural nature, especially theaters.

Gran Teatro de Huelva

Architecture

The exterior facade of the Gran Teatro de Huelva has cushioning along its entire length and three entrance openings with semicircular arches for the entrance of the public, while on the sides the entrance openings are straight and used for the entrance and exit of the participants in the functions. The central area of the facade is marked by huge stained glass windows supported by pieces of podium (decorated with masks) and in turn corbels with plant decoration and separated all of them by giant corinthian columns.

The facade is completed by a third floor with ornate garlanded oculi, and the building is topped by two pinnacles on each side and a pediment with a cartouche

Functionalist in the interior distribution, its spatial schemes do not respond to the traditional design of a theater, since it was built thinking of the new spectacle called “cinematograph”, which was beginning to emerge at the time. Proof of this is the existing disproportion between the spectator area and the stage or the lobby, both of which were much smaller in order to benefit a larger capacity.

From 1984 to 1990 a profound remodeling was carried out by Antonio de la Lama.
