Colombinas Festivities. August

The Colombinas are more than a festivity. The Colombinas are more than a party. They are the reunion with our essence, with one of the hallmarks of this enterprising and open city, proud of its past and hopeful about its future.

These festivities commemorate the departure of the three caravels that, bound for the Indies, discovered a new world for mankind in 1492. Huelva celebrates every August 3rd the beginning of that fantastic adventure, which is a commemorative date for Spain and America, and has in this city its place of departure and celebration. The Colombinas thus become more than just a party, it is the celebration of a historic date for the history of Spain and the world.

In 2012, Huelva’s big festival premiered a new fairground that offers all visitors more comfortable and modern services with three main areas:

  • The area dedicated to the booths.
  • The space dedicated to concerts of relevant figures of the Spanish and international music scene.
  • The amusement park.
Fiestas Colombinas

The area of the “casetas” is divided into streets with names that pay homage to important areas of Huelva. These “casetas” are all free entry, this is a sign of the open character of the people of Huelva with its visitors. In them you can enjoy the food and drinks of the region.

All the concerts that are programmed during the Colombinas festivities and that take place next to the estuary, on an open-air stage, are also free of charge. These concerts, with free admission for all those who wish to attend, congregate a large number of people, since the artists who participate in them are well known and, moreover, of various styles.

The big day of the Colombinas festivities is August 3, but the activities commemorating the departure of the caravels to the New World begin in late July. Among the activities are nautical competitions such as the Andalusian Championship or the Trophies Colombinos in different modalities. At the end of July, in recent years, there is the test of the lighting of the front and the entire fairgrounds. From that day onwards, the Colombinas were inaugurated and began to be six days of partying and fun,in which music, dance, culture, sports, bullfighting and attractions, gather in different areas of the city throughout the day, being at night when the events that bring together the largest number of people take place.

Also noteworthy are the bullfights in the Plaza de Toros de la Merced, in which the best of the bullfighting world come to Huelva to fight. The Colombino Soccer Trophy, one of the most important national tournaments that take place during the soccer preseason, represents another attraction of these Huelva festivities. This tournament has been attended, since its creation, by the most important teams in Spain and the world.

All this is just a small part of what, from the end of July and beginning of August, can be enjoyed in Huelva, which lives with an ever-increasing excitement, its Colombinas festivities. Come and experience them!
